Persephone

I designed this necklace for the 2012 Atlanta Bead Society's annual challenge (and tied for first place) The theme was "Fit for a Queen," so I decided to draw from the story of Persephone, the beautiful nature goddess who was kidnapped by Pluto, God of the Underworld, to be his bride. While held captive in the Underworld, Pluto tricked Persephone into eating four pomegranate seeds, and now must spend four months of the year as Queen of the Underworld while the earth above dies back until her return. When designing this necklace, I envisioned a Persephone in mourning, wearing black, with glints of red and purple serving to remind her of the pomegranate seeds that sealed her fate.
